Australian English

0:01           Ok hi, So yesterday i was chatting on Skype with a friend from New York
0:06           And, I know there's a lot of differences in.. Every country has their own language even
0:10           like english-speaking languages have their own takes on particular words & phrases
0:14           but wasn't till my friend and i were discussing them and
0:18           you know, comparing different words and stuff that i realized just how many there
0:22           are. Yes technically we speak the same language but there are so many
0:26           differences, You could be forgiven for thinking it is another language. So
0:30           here are a few that we were talking about yesterday.
0:31           When it comes to cars, You pop the hood
0:36           We don;t call it a hood, we call it a bonnet.
0:38           And we don't pop the trunk at the back
0:41           We don't call it a trunk. We call it a boot.
0:44           No idea why. What you call a truck, We call a ute. (Short for utility vehicle).
0:50           With a baby you know you put the diaper on a baby, Yeah, we don't
0:55           call them diapers here, We call them nappies. And what do you put in a baby's mouth?
1:01           A pacifier right? Yeah, i think if you said pacifier in Australia most people would be like "What the fuck is that?"
1:05           we actually pull the best docking i'm not kidding but if that's what we call
1:09           We actually call it a dummy, And i'm not kidding! You go to the gas station, we go to the service station which is odd, because
1:14           because people don't really get their cars serviced there anymore anyway
1:17           and then because Australian's are so big on slang, we don't even call it a service station, we just
1:22           call it a servo.
1:24           You go to the grocery store, we go to the supermarket. You walk down the sidewalk, we walk down the
1:28           foot path.
1:29           You park in a parking lot, we park in a carpark. You wear a sweater, we call it a jumper
1:34           You call it a soda, we call it a soft drink, Which i think originated from liquor being a
1:39           hard drink and then your mixers being soft? I guess that's where that came from.
1:44           But we don't really call it soda. Oh, and then there's shopping cart, which we call a trolley.
1:48           Oh there are so many! - Oh, and what you call a cookie, we call a biscuit.
1:54           and that's even more confusing because what you call a biscuit is what we call a
1:58           scone, except we don't pronounce it 'scone', we pronounce it 'scon'
2:03           but we do technically spell it the same, S C O N E.
2:04           But it sounds like 'scon' Think Tron.
2:09           mmm scones while watching Tron.
2:11           i'm sure there are millions of others and then there's England and they've got
2:14           a whole other set of words and phrases and stuff which i don't know about.
2:18           but it's fun, i like the differences and stuff, but what i think is funny is like
2:23           in Australia, our media is all American
2:25           really, like we get a lot of American TV, and all the movies are here
2:29           and the music and everything so
2:31           we fully understand the american english language, you know, what i was talking about before
2:35           talk about cookies and diapers and pacifiers
2:39           and all that stuff, and we know exactly what you're talking about, but i think if we
2:43           went over to like New York and started talking in our regular Australian
2:48           English language, talking about dummies in a baby wearing a nappy
2:52           after you put all the junk in the boot of the car, you'd be looking at us like
2:57           "What planet are you from?!"
3:02           Oh and wouldn't you know it the camera died right there, but that's ok i was pretty much done anyway.
3:05           So what i want to do is i want to tag
3:07           a couple of people
3:09           but i don't know how to do that
3:10           or what that really means. The first person is Roland in England, I want you
3:14           to make a video like this one
3:16           sort of like
3:17           giving as examples of
3:19           unique phrases or words from your region or what you find different about
3:22           the way that
3:24           people speak in your part of the world compared to other parts of the english speaking world.
3:27           (If that even makes any sense) And the other person is Charles, TenderCharles who is in Canada
3:33           I'd be interested to here the differences between
3:36           your language.. Wait, that sounds weird because Charles actually speaks French and English
3:42           But i'm talking about the English part
3:43           You know what i mean.
3:47           So i don't know how to tag you, but
3:49           if you want to make a video then make it a response to this one
3:53           and that will be a fun little game we can play so
3:55           Yeah, ok, that will do
3:58           Ok Bye.
